Zakat
Your Zakat can return someone's sight.
Millions of people are blind from conditions a short operation can reverse. Almost none of them can pay for it. Your Zakat can.
100% of your Zakat goes to people who qualify to receive it.
Eligibility
Why this work is eligible for your Zakat.
Zakat is owed to eight categories of people named in the Quran. The first two are the poor and the needy. The patients we treat belong to both.
-
They cannot pay
The people who arrive at our mobile clinics and hospitals are farmers, labourers, and parents living below the poverty line. An operation is out of reach for them.
-
Blindness takes away their income
Sight loss does not only cost a person their vision. It costs them their work, and it often takes a family member out of work too, to care for them.
-
Treatment is free
Patients pay nothing. Your Zakat covers the cost so they do not have to.
The people you help
One operation. A life handed back.

Our Zakat policy
Your Zakat stays separate.
Zakat is not a donation. It is an obligation, and it comes with rules about who is allowed to receive it. We follow those rules, and we keep the records to prove it.
100% reaches people who qualify
Every dollar of Zakat you give is spent on eligible recipients. Our admin and fundraising costs are paid from other funds.
Kept in its own account
Zakat funds are recorded separately. They are never mixed with our general donations.
We target Zakat-eligible populations
We carefully select areas with people living in severe economic conditions.
Directed to those in greatest need
We prioritise families living well below the poverty line, including people displaced by conflict and crisis.
Our Zakat policy follows the rulings of the late Sheikh Abdulaziz bin Baz and Sheikh Muhammad ibn Salih Al-Uthaymeen. Our work is endorsed by Sheikh Dr. Saleh bin Abdullah bin Humaid and Sheikh Dr. Saud bin Ibrahim Al-Shuraim, Imams of the Grand Mosque in Makkah, and Prof. Dr. Salah Al-Sawy, President of Mishkat University.

How much Zakat do you owe?
Zakat is 2.5% of the qualifying wealth you have held for one lunar year, if that wealth is above the nisab threshold. Add up what you own, subtract what you owe, and take 2.5% of what is left.

Before you give
Questions donors often ask.
Is my Zakat calculated and distributed according to Shariah?
Yes. We follow the rulings of recognised scholars on who qualifies to receive Zakat, and 100% of your Zakat reaches eligible recipients. Our administrative and fundraising costs are covered from separate, non-Zakat funds.
How do you keep Zakat separate from other donations?
Zakat funds are recorded in their own account and are never mixed with general donations. When you give through this page your gift is flagged as Zakat and tracked to eligible recipients only.
Can I give my Zakat monthly?
Yes. Choose “Monthly” at the top of the form and your Zakat is given in equal instalments across the year. You can pause or change it at any time.
Is my Zakat tax-deductible in the United States?
Yes. Al Basar USA is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit (EIN 92-1804033), so your Zakat is tax-deductible to the extent allowed by law. You will receive a receipt for your records.
Fulfil your obligation
Give your Zakat with certainty.
Your obligation reaches someone who cannot see, and cannot pay to change that.
